Keeping Your Pets Healthy and Happy

Pets in most households are considered members of the family, which is why owners go out of their way to make sure their pets are healthy and happy. As it turns out, keeping your pet healthy and happy aren’t mutually exclusive. As you do one, you are doing the other.

Exercise

While humans typically loathe exercise, your pets love it. Physical activity is a must for every pet’s daily routine to keep them healthy and happy. From taking your dog for runs in the park to installing a wheel in your hamster’s cage, pets need and want to get around.

Good Diet

Like their owners, pets need a well-balanced diet to keep them from getting sick. And when your pet isn’t ill, it’s happy. Instead of relying on basic dry foods from the local grocery store, consider giving your pet premium wet food that’s leaner and more nutritious.

Yearly Vet Checkups

Make sure your pet is healthy and happy by taking it to your local vet for a yearly checkup. Your vet will give your pet the shots it needs to fight disease and give you advice to improve or maintain its health. Owners have trouble finding a reliable local vet, but you can easily find one online with resources like Canada 411 and other search engines.

Find Friends

Animals enjoy interacting with their own species, so if possible, make time for your pet to play with others at a dog park or neighbor’s home. There, your pet will be happy and get in play time that will help its health.

Common Health Problems in Cats

Just like any other animal, cats come with a list of common health problem which owners should always be mindful of.  Here are just a few.

  • Like humans, cats can pick up a cold from time to time. If you cat coughs or sneezes but still continues to behave normally then don’t fret. However if your cat is coughing or sneezing with a mucous discharge and is not behaving as normal, then take a trip to the vet.
  • Cats can get themselves into fights with other neighborhood cats and other wildlife. Your cat may have scratches under its fur and you would never know. Most of the time the wounds are superficial and nothing to worry about. Other times, a wound can get infected and turn into an abscess. Check your cats skin regularly and keep an eye on any wounds it may have.
  • Many people don’t realize, but cats are very susceptible to Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). This is very serious for some cats. It is caused from food crystallizing in your cats stomach and then not being passed through the urinary tract, causing it to block. This is much more common in male than female cats, as they have a smaller opening for urine to escape. Specially formulated cat food is designed to support a certain pH level and will help to prevent such disease.

Many health problems in cats is preventable, as long as an owner is vigilant in checking and watching for symptoms of illness. Always feed your cat good quality food and have fresh water available always.
