Just like any other animal, cats come with a list of common health problem which owners should always be mindful of. Here are just a few.
- Like humans, cats can pick up a cold from time to time. If you cat coughs or sneezes but still continues to behave normally then don’t fret. However if your cat is coughing or sneezing with a mucous discharge and is not behaving as normal, then take a trip to the vet.
- Cats can get themselves into fights with other neighborhood cats and other wildlife. Your cat may have scratches under its fur and you would never know. Most of the time the wounds are superficial and nothing to worry about. Other times, a wound can get infected and turn into an abscess. Check your cats skin regularly and keep an eye on any wounds it may have.
- Many people don’t realize, but cats are very susceptible to Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). This is very serious for some cats. It is caused from food crystallizing in your cats stomach and then not being passed through the urinary tract, causing it to block. This is much more common in male than female cats, as they have a smaller opening for urine to escape. Specially formulated cat food is designed to support a certain pH level and will help to prevent such disease.
Many health problems in cats is preventable, as long as an owner is vigilant in checking and watching for symptoms of illness. Always feed your cat good quality food and have fresh water available always.
